Food trends Summer 2018
At Holiday Inn Melbourne on Flinders we know a thing or two about food, and we have done the research on the summer food trends for 2018 so that you don’t need to.
If you visit us over the next six months, you will see these trends featured in our conference and events spaces, which have been designed to showcase the best of Melbourne.
Ditch the standard savoy crackers and cheese on a toothpick; consider the trend of grazing platters for your party, for both big and small, this summer. These days grazing platters are about quality produce, great flavour combinations and instagramable moments #plattergoals
Our must have items on a grazing platter:
- A great mixture of textures – think different types of cheeses – soft and firm – even blue cheese if you’re game!
- Selection of crackers –our choices are lavosh bread and croissini.
- Dry fruits and nuts – a healthy alternative.
- Fresh fruit – refreshing and healthy addition to any platter. The perfect way to draw your eye to the grazing platter. Anything goes, blueberries, strawberries or grapes.
- Meaty treats –ham, salami and prosciutto – jazz it up with different varieties.
Setting it up is easy! Place the bigger food items first. That is the meats and cheeses and get creative with the placement- cut the cheese it in different shapes and roll the meats. Then place smaller items like olives, pickles and cherry tomatoes to fill in the space.
Street Food Inspiration
Street food is renowned for being at the forefront for food innovations and its presence has exploded over the last few years, especially around Melbourne. The greatest thing about street food is the ability that vendors have to keep up with the customers’ demands for new flavours, combinations and textures.
When putting together the inaugural menu for our newly relaunched conference and events spaces, our head chef Nirvik Ghosh researched trends and his menu showcases what makes Melbourne unique.
Gone are the standard meat pies, fish and chips, and chocolate cake, in its place delight your tastebuds with mini burgers, compressed watermelon with buffalo mozzarella, petite beef and red wine pies or the absolutely decadent lemon meringue tarts.
Veganism – New Food Trends Summer 2018
The growth of veganism has the potential for more growth in 2019. With more than 57 million #vegan posts on Instagram, it is safe to say that the plant-based living is more popular than ever before. It is no longer associated with stale lettuce and soggy beans, in its place you can try spicy sweet potato cakes, avocado (avocado latte anybody?) and beetroot chocolate cake.
According to Google trends, the search term “veganism” has been steadily rising since 2012, around the time that Instagram was launched on Android devices. With more than 800 million users, it’s one of the most popular social media platforms available.
Social Media Worthy Desserts
Let’s be honest, did you really have dessert if you didn’t post it on Instagram and with the hashtag #dessert?
Instead of the usual hotel sweets, this year our head chef has taken it to the next level with our taste of Melbourne upgrade packages. Add a splash of colour and a dash of sugar to your meeting in The Studio, with our Painter’s donut wall, or indulge with some delicate macarons, just like those found in the shopping arcades of Melbourne in The Arcade.
With summer fast approaching now is the time to get your creative hat on and think of blends that will both excite and delight your guests.
We spoke to our bar team at Sirocco Bar and their must use ingredient for their custom cocktails is Champagne. With the festive season fast approaching, Champagne brings joy to any event. Plus of your guests don’t fancy your recipe, they can drink it straight.
At our recent launch party, our team created a special and unique cocktail that was both great to drink but also instagramable with the edible flowers.
