Sunday 8th May
Let’s admit it, mothers deserve spoiling every day, but there’s that one special day of the year when it’s more important than any other to show Mum that you love her. It’s tradition to shower Mums with gratitude on Mother’s Day.
From breakfast in bed to macaroni necklaces, every one has their own personal way of pampering Mum on the second Sunday in May. For over 100 years we’ve been celebrating the love, dedication and hard work of our Mums, rewarding them with a full day of relaxation and indulgence.
We all want the efforts we make on Mother’s Day to be remembered throughout the year. It’s not enough to just make Mum feel like she’s super special for a single day, we want that feeling to last. So what kind of things will show Mum that you care, and provide the lasting memories she deserves?
We put together 6 great ideas for making a lasting impression on Mothers Day 2016.
Flowers, Chocolates & Cards
Ok, the most obvious of all and some might think cliché, but it’s a good place to start and at least shows Mum you thought of her.
Simply handing Mum a box of chocolates or bunch of flowers may not be enough of an impression, but team it up with a thoughtfully written card and you’re sure to melt her heart.
Include some sentimental words about a significant moment from early childhood or include a special Mother’s Day poem and some sincere words about the great contribution she’s made. This is a sure fire way to make the flowers, chocolates and card combo a winner.
Cook for Mum
Another popular idea is to cook for Mum, with the annual breakfast in bed becoming the unofficial symbol of Mother’s Day. But don’t underestimate the pitter-patter of little feet making their way to Mum on her special Sunday. It’s the little things that create lasting memories.
Treating Mum to a home cooked meal gives Mum a well-deserved break from the kitchen, but it’s spending time with Mum that matters. Enjoying each other’s company over a meal, whether it is breakfast, brunch or afternoon tea is one of the nicest things you can do for Mum. Plus uninterrupted family time is a great way to demonstrate how much you appreciate her.
Picnic in the Park
Grab a picnic rug and find a spot to get Mum outdoors. Visit the Zoo or the Botanical Gardens. A lovely day out could be the most relaxing and rewarding type of Mother’s Day of all, especially for those with young families.
With over 320 animal species from Australia and around the world, Melbourne Zoo is Australia’s oldest zoo, open since 1862. Set among flower gardens and picnic areas, it is one of the most popular attractions in Melbourne and a great day out for all ages.
This year it’s a special Mother’s Day at Melbourne Zoo for new Mums Asian Elephant Dokkoon (with her two calves Mali and Man Jai) and Sumatran Orang-utan Maimunah (with her daughter Dewi).
Royal Botanic Gardens
Melbourne’s internationally renowned botanical gardens offer 38 hectares of landscaped gardens to explore. A mixture of native and non-native flora and fauna, including over 10,000 floral species, makes the Royal Botanic Gardens special.
The Ian Potter Foundation’s Children Garden, open 10am–sunset, is an interactive educational environment where kids of all ages can get their hands dirty playing in the garden. A variety of plants, water, structures and pathways capture the imagination of children; a great place to create happy memories for Mum and the kids.
Mother’s Day Classic
Walk, run or volunteer in pink to raise funds for breast cancer research with the 2016 Mother’s Day Classic. Held annually on Mother’s Day for the past 17 years, it’s Australia’s largest charity fun run or walk.
Giving the community something active to do on Mother’s Day, whether that be participating or raising proceeds for charity, is a great way to remember those that have been impacted by breast cancer. Funds raised are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Last year, 9352 families participated in the Mother’s Day Classic across Australia, making it a great day out and a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day together while making a meaningful contribution.
The colourful event involves a choice of either a 4km or 8km walk or run around Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens and the Tan.
