Holiday Inn Recommends: Melbourne Musicals & Theatre Performances this Winter
It may be chilly outside, but Melbourne offers plenty of entertainment to inspire you through winter. As Australia’s cultural heartland, Melbourne has an amazing array of theatre shows to thrill everyone from children to adults.
Rivalling New York’s Broadway and London’s West End, dozens of local and international performances grace Melbourne stages every week. The city’s theatres delight audiences with a range of productions, including comedy, musicals, cabaret, stage plays, opera and the ballet.
Melbourne’s theatres – from the state of the art to the historical to the independent – are simply the most spectacular way to enjoy a winter evening.
These are our top suggestions for upcoming Melbourne musicals.
Disney Presents The Lion King
There is nothing like Disney to capture the imagination of the young and young at heart alike.
After touching millions around the world, everyone’s Disney favourite The Lion King, is brought to life in Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. The landmark musical event will also play at Perth’s Crown Theatre this coming November.
The Regent Theatre, located on Collins Street in the Melbourne CBD, is just a short tram ride from Holiday Inn Melbourne on Flinders. Catch this once in a lifetime event before it closes on 4th October.
Songs for the Fallen
One for the adults this September-October, Songs for the Fallen is a delightful musical comedy that had critics raving after seasons in Sydney and Brisbane.
Set in Paris in the mid-1800’s, the storyline follows the exceptional life of Marie Duplessis. From poverty to extravagance, the courtesan and party girl became one of France’s most wildly infamous women.
Songs for the Fallen will play at Art Centre Melbourne from 29 September – 3 October 2015. Tickets are expected to sell out fast. Just a pleasant stroll along the Yarra or short tram ride will get you there from Holiday Inn Melbourne on Flinders. It’s the perfect excuse for a weekend city break.
After entertaining more than 65 million theatregoers worldwide since opening in 1981, the legendary musical CATS is experiencing a revival.
One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, the London based song and dance spectacular is based on T.S. Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’. CATS the musical has received outstanding reviews for its musical score, staging, costumes and witty script.
The enchanting feline fantasy will tour Australia in 2015, Melbourne’s Regent Theatre hosting the show in December. This is definitely not one to be missed.
