Southern Cross Train Station

Southern Cross Train Station is a major railway station in Docklands, Melbourne. The station is found on the corner of Spencer Street and Collins Street. It is a 5 minute walk from the doorstep of Holiday Inn Melbourne on Flinders.

Southern Cross Train Station is the main terminal of the state’s regional railway network operated by V/Line, The Overland – which is a railway service to Adelaide and NSW TrainLink XPT services to Sydney. Thee station also serves the suburban rail network operated by Metro Trains. 

Underneath the train station a coach terminal is found. The Skybus Super Shuttle is the quickest way to arrive in the Melbourne city from Melbourne Airport as well as Avalon Airport.

Facts about Southern Cross Train Station

  • Southern Cross Train Station was known as Spencer Street Station.
  • The station opened on the 17th of January 1859.
  • The station has undergone two refurbishments – first in October 1960 and again in October 2002.
  • The architect responsible for the current design is Nicholas Grimshaw.
  • In May 2014 the historic Water Tower Clock was installed in the concorse of the station. The clock had originally been erected in 1882 at Flinders Street Station.
  • Beside Southern Cross Train Station, Spencer Outlet Centre can be found. It houses department store Harris Scarfe along with Witchery, Cotton On, Cue plus many more outlets.
  • Southern Cross Train Station is one of the five stations forming the City Loop.
  • The station houses a Metro supermarket, chemist and many food vendors.
