Moomba is Australia’s largest free community festival and one of Melbourne’s favourite family activities and annual events. Join in celebrating Moomba’s 66th year during Labour Day Weekend on the 6th of March to the 9th of March 2020 along the banks of the Melbourne’s renowned Yarra River.
History of Celebrating Moomba
Presented by the City of Melbourne, Moomba is a fun-community driven festival. Moomba crowns a King or Queen each year with past royalty including former Olympian Cathy Freeman, entertainers Dame Edna Everage, personalities Molly Meldrum, soccer champion Harry Kewell and AFL coaching legend Mick Malthouse.
Moomba takes place all around Melbourne around Alexandra Gardens, Birrarung Marr and the Yarra River. It includes a variety of entertainment for all ages including live music, children activities and water sports. The parade is the highlight of the festival where thousands and cheer and watch on.
Events to watch for at Moomba
Carnival – Located in Alexandra Gardens & Birrarung Marr
Join the festivities in the heart of Melbourne and enjoy the many activities and live music available from Friday 6-9pm and Saturday, Sunday and Monday 10am-10pm.
Fireworks – Located in Alexandra Gardens & Birrarung Marr
Enjoy the thrill of seeing the sky light up with explosions of colour, every night of the festival from 9:30pm.
Masters Championship Water skiing – Located Yarra Rive, Batman Avenue
Highly skilled athletes have returned this year to compete in the Moomba Master Championship and claim the illustrious title! Watch the world’s best water skiers and wakeboarders across 16 countries compete in this well-loved international event.
Birdman Rally – Located Yarra River, Birrarung Marr
The highly entertaining and comedic Birdman Rally is back where competitors aim to fly across the Yarra River by jumping off a 4 metre platform wearing wings attached to their unique costumes for charity. A definite competition you don’t want to miss, beginning at 11:30pm on the 8th of March.
Parade – Begins on Birdwood Avenue through Kings Domain Park and concludes at Linlithgow Avenue
Enjoy and see Melbournians put on a show with creative and beautifully crafted floats accompanied by dancers, adults and kids of all ages.
