UFC 243

UFC 243: Whittaker vs Adesanya and Holm v Pennington goes down this October

Whittaker vs Adesanya

Australia’s Robert Whittaker will meet Israel Adesanya of New Zealand to unify the middleweight championship at Marvel Stadium for  UFC 243.

Projected as having the potential to be the ‘biggest crowd in UFC history’, UFC 243 will be held on Sunday, October 6 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands District. The event will begin from 10am and although scheduled for the same day as the NRL Grand Final, officials are expecting over 60,000 fans – which is a sold-out crowd for an event of this calibre.

Melbourne is not unfamiliar to showcasing UFC Championships, having hosted the epic bantamweight title between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm on November 15, 2015. The championship event – which also took place at Marvel Stadium – surpassed the record for the largest MMA event in UFC history, with 56,214 UFC fans travelling from far and wide to witness the upset four years ago.

This year’s main event for UFC 243– a battle between middleweights Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya – will take place in The Octagon from 1pm, where Whittaker will finally defend his title against the young up-and-comer.

Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker is Australia’s first UFC champion, returning with a vengeance following a career-pausing abdominal injury earlier this year, which caused him to pull out of his title fight with Adesanya.

Adesanya is a rising star in the world of UFC, fighting 6 times since his debut in February 2018 and remaining undefeated by any opponent. The fan favourite resides in New Zealand and will travel across the tasman to take on Whittaker.

UFC 243 tickets are available to the general public from Friday, August 16, through Ticketmaster.

Holm v Pennington

The preachers daughter is headed back to Melbourne – the place where she broke the MMA universe four years ago when she bet Ronda Rousey’s jaw with a headkick. Holly will fight Raquel Pennington, currently the No.6 ranked women’s Batanweight on UFC’s roster (Holly sits at No. 3).

Holm is coming off a first round knockout defeat to Amanda Nunes at UFC 239 in Las Vegas in July.
